So I'm really excited that college football season is here! My favorite college football team is the Texas Longhorns, but this is not a post about sports. It's about when I went to Austin, Texas last fall and absolutely fell in love with the city and the college town. The people there were so nice, friendly, and polite. I'd hate to say it but they were the opposite of New York.

New York is a fast paced town with a lot of busy people. New Yorkers are one of a kind and I've grown accustomed to the way we treat each other. In a way, I identify more with being a New Yorker than anything else except for my Catholic upbringing. When we don't get our way we make it very difficult for others. We also tell it like it is and we are always in a hurry. That's the Big Apple.

Austin on the other hand is a college town. Austin is probably best known for the University of Texas at Austin but did you know that Austin is also the capital of Texas. The city 's nickname is the…

Business Casual

I once read somewhere in a job or human resources article that you are supposed to dress for the job that you want and not for the job that you have and I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. You should dress for the position that you want even if you are just an entry level worker who aspires to be Gordon Gekko or some hotshot banker/lawyer.
Besides on job interviews, in my seven plus years of working professionally, I've never had to wear a tie to work. I've always liked that I could wear whatever I wanted to work. As long as I don't wear a t shirt, shorts, or sandals to work I know that I won't have a problem with HR. I normally wear a collared shirt, jeans, and sneakers to work and for the most part I've been happy.
The job that I have, which is essentially in a call center, doesn't require any formal business wear. Recently, however, I've discover that I tend to be more productive at work when I wear formal business attire. I just feel better abo…

Roger Federer

A lot of people close to me know that I am a huge sports fan. I love all kinds of sports and I do follow all  American sports very closely. I admire a lot of our professional athletes but there only are a handful that I admire greatly - and they are Tom Brady, Kobe Bryant, Roger Federer, and Josh Hamilton. These guys were on my list back in 2007 and they still are as we approach 2013. Nothing has changed except for more glory, MVPs, and championships won. They are still at the top of their respective sport. As far as my number one favorite athlete goes it's close between Tom Brady and Roger Federer, but Roger wins hands down because of what's he's doing now at age 31.

It would be very difficult for me to rank these guys, but I have Roger Federer as #1 because he returned to the world's number one ranking at age 31. Anyone who follows Tennis knows that it's a young person's game and it's virtually impossible to dominate the sport as long as Federer has. A gu…

Politics is a sensitive topic that should never be brought up unless you are ready to defend your point of view in heated interactions with friends and family members. It's a topic that can divide families and friends into groups that never before existed. Unfortunately, I learned the the hard way when I argued politics with friends. I dislike arguing with friends when I don't have to. Now I understand why they say to never discuss politics at the dinner table.

I strongly believe that political discussions are good when you debate them in a proper manner with a set of rules to follow. That way, we minimize personal attacks and prevent ill will towards one another. After all, what debaters do is introduce their argument, provide it with evidence, and then defend them against another's argument. The end goal in any debate should be to have proved your point or persuaded others to change their minds about such a topic in a civilized manner and without any form of trickery or …

Today, I want to talk about my experience that I had with a salesman. I went to a Men's Department looking to buy a suit. I am the most fastest of shoppers and the salesman was willing to assist so it was an ideal situation for both the buyer and the seller.

The salesman asked me what I was looking for and I said something along the lines of traditional, yet fashionable. The salesman then gave me some recommendations based and was sold on them. When it came to actually purchasing the items, the salesman tried to sell and pushed something that didn't meet my needs. The item was not the brand that I wanted because I never heard of it and it was more expensive.

If I had buying questions I would've asked why the salesman would recommend such a brand and why it was more expensive. When I told him that I wasn't familiar with that brand and that it was more expensive, the salesman ended up agreeing with me and that officially killed the upsell. Had he defended his product, an…

There was a tragedy that struck New York City earlier this morning. At 903am a Gunman, 53 year old Jeffrey Johnson, a former employee of an import apparel company, shot and killed his former Manager and then got into a gunfight with New York City police. Shortly thereafter, the Gunman was dead and nine people were hurt.

When I first heard of this I was really disgusted. I cannot understand why scum like this exist. Then I got scared, because it was so close to home. It wasn't another city or another state but a couple of miles from where I live. Then I got mad, after learning from the media that the gunman had 8 rounds on him, and probably had other evil intentions. Then, I felt thankful that we have the best police in the world to protect us. The NYPD and Counter Terrorism unit do not get enough credit that they deserve.

A tragedy happened this morning, and New York City is still the safest big city in the world thanks to the NYPD and Counter Terrorism unit.

As Summer winds down my favorite season is just a few weeks away! The Fall or the better word for it, Autumn, is almost here. I'm excited for the upcoming new Fall TV schedule and for FOOTBALL! If you watch a lot of TV you're also excited about the Fall and everyone in America watches a lot of TV so everyone's excited. And that's just indoors! lol Because when you go outside, you see the leaves change colors. Yes, New York City is one of those blessed cities in the world that has all four seasons with Autumn being the most colorful IMO.

Not only does Autumn give me something to look forward to and makes me feel great, it also makes me contemplative of what I did during the Summer. I normally use my day off on Labor Day to reflect upon what I did in the Summer. Sort of like that episode of Saved By The Bell where Zack Morris takes off from his first day of school to 'rest' because his mother told him to and Screech, Slater, Kelly, Jesse, and Lisa all cut class t…

The Expendables 2

Going to go see The Expendables 2 this weekend with my buds. I've seen one trailer and don't even remember much of it and I haven't read the reviews yet so if it's anything like the first one then it should be a great movie.

The thing with some of these sequels is they tend to be really awful and that's because the script is usually drastically different from the first one. Why does this happen? Why mess with a formula that was wildly successful in the first place? Who knows?

If I were the creative type, I'd ask myself WHY NOT go in that different direction? Risk it on the house's dime and at the same time put my reputation on the line as a wildly creative person. If the movie ends up being popular then I get ALL the credit or at least the majority of it. That's what I call THE CREATIVE FORMULA  If it doesn't then people expected the sequel to disappoint anyway especially considering how great the first one was and then that expectation softens your…

Obama Biden 2012

I will vote for Obama Biden come this November. There's no wavering on my part. You can count on my vote President Obama and Vice President Biden.

Two Year Work Anniversary

Two years ago today I attended an orientation in midtown Manhattan that would change my life. That orientation of course was for Time Warner Cable. I went in without the slightest idea of what would ultimately become my main source of income and full time job for the past two years. Since then I have learned a lot and grown in many ways - professionally, socially, and financially.

It's not hard to imagine that I've poured my heart and soul into my job working everyday and improving upon my skill set as a Client Services Specialist. Yes, that means I'm two years older, but also two years wiser and more mature than ever. I realize that work has meaning and is important in just more an economic sense. A job gives me sense of self worth and it gives me a greater appreciation of time more specifically what I do on weekends.

I had to make the best of it with my limited free time on the weekends . For example, I love travel so much so that I traveled around for three months late …

Starting a Business

In today's edition of my blog I want to talk about starting a business. In the democratic, capitalistic society that we live in, anyone can start a business. Why start a business? My answer to that is WHY NOT start a business especially for those who are in school and/or are currently looking for a job. Quite frankly everyone in that position should start a business. You have nothing to lose but your own time and to boot starting a business will build up your resume and maybe even your bank account.

A friend mentioned to me the other day that he had applied to a tutoring job in which the position would pay him a part time salary. I was elated for him as he had to be thrifty the whole summer. Now, after asking him the usual what, where, when, and how questions about the job I got around to asking about his boss. He said that his boss was a youngish looking law school student. That goes to show you that you don't have to be successful or experienced to start a business. I mean,…

Unwatched Series

Watching True Blood. Such a good series that I just started watching now that first aired back in 2008! I don't know why I'm drawn to True Blood. I think it's because it's a supernatural show about vampires that draws upon folklore. It's a show that entertains and makes me smarter. That's why I love it and can't stop watching. It's just different from all the shows that I normally watch which are based on reality.
There are just way too many shows to watch and not enough time to watch them. I am also watching The Mentalist again which is another good detective show about a former psychic who doesn't believe in the supernatural, and who uses the power of observation to solve crimes .I stopped watching it temporarily due to my busy schedule and lack of time.
I guess I would have more time if I just stopped watching reruns of my favorite shows like The Office and sports. But it's just TV right and not that serious!

What is business? You can get the exact definition in a college textbook or you can derive one of your own. For me it's a financial related transaction that effects all. Now there's no right way or wrong way of doing business. But you can't argue that the act of doing business effects us all in some shape or form. In my ideal world, business is done correctly following the rules, customs, and regulations. There are no shortcuts, only creation of value in the form of a product or service. In that ideal world, we all TREAT each other with RESPECT. And that's how business should be done and with that will go a long way.

Newspaper and Magazine Subscriptions

Have you ever wondered why when you subscribe to a newspaper or magazine that it takes up to six to eight weeks for the first issue to arrive on your front door? And why all the magazines that are currently for sale are labeled a month in advance? Like it would be the September issue but it's actually August? Because I've been wondering the same thing! I'm sure that those who work in the publishing industry, specifically in customer service, get these questions posed to them all the time.

As far as the delay with the magazine to arrive on your front door steps goes, I supposed it's a logistical thing where the first issue takes some time to get printed and distributed from some warehouse only because it's the most economical and profitable way for the publisher to operate. I supposed that it's also a revenue trick that publishers don't tell you about because they understand that the longer a subscriber waits for the first issue, the more likely they will go…

Lebron James

Lebron James is this 6'9 260lb specimen who's agile, athletic, and intelligent to begin with, and now that he's getting better and improving upon all facets of his game, many fans now have a compelling argument that he's the best player talent wise to ever play the game.

All Lebron lacks are the rings that MJ has, and he's already won one this year. I'm talking physical athletic gifts and God given abilities. Lebron has them and is working his butt off to utilize those gifts to win championships - NBA and Olympic . Apparently, at least legendary coach Jim Boeheim agrees with me that Lebron might be better than Jordan in that in regard. And that's not to show disrespect to Jordan or Basketball history, that's to show the respect I have for Lebron James's game.

We are witnessing history in the making.

Hulu Plus Free Trial

Today, I got an email from Hulu Plus that asked me to sign up for a free two week trial. I had already signed up for their original two week free trial and I did not like it very much because it did not have the show that I wanted. I felt it wasn't worth the $7.99/month price.

Yesterday I got the urge to watch The Office and lo and behold the entire series is available on Hulu Plus. So I remembered the email that I got that what I thought offered another free trial to Hulu Plus. After all, Netflix had offered two free trials (and I am strongly considering them because of their second free trial offer.) To my dismay, Hulu Plus did not offer me a second free trial, and as a result I am leaning toward signing up with Netflix because they also have the entire series of The Office and the option to rent DVDs by mail.
Had Hulu Plus given me that second two week trial I would have shelled out the extra $7.99/month to watch The Office for a month after the free trial had ended, instead I d…

From a very young age I have always aspired to become an Entrepreneur. I've always had big dreams but never took action because I thought I was too young or had to finish up with school. Well now, that I'm not young anymore and have graduated from college, I've found that this is the perfect time to embellish the idea of entrepreneurship.

The idea of entrepreneurship is one that excites and motivates me but is something that is not firmly envisioned in my mind. There are no clear goals or set paths for me and that has to change starting today. I believe that entrepreneurship once obtained is a great achievement and leads to other decisive actions. Being an Entrepreneur will certainly bring out my leadership qualities, confidence and independence. The more I achieve success the less I will doubt myself. Unlike some cushy corporate jobs, being an Entrepreneur requires one to stay on his/her toes in order to remain competitive in their chosen field.

That chosen field for me is…

Today is my last day on vacation and I return to work tomorrow. I had nine days off from work. I had a great time visiting upstate New York and Connecticut. I reflected upon my life, purpose, and ambitions and I am a better person because of this. And I celebrated my 31st birthday. It was a full, fun filled, adventurous week and I am kind of sad that it's over. But like all good things, it must come to and end.

Tomorrow is a new beginning. Tomorrow at work I have the chance to make myself a better employee, a better co-worker, and a better businessman. I have the power to make a positive impact and give it 110%. I'm so excited and I'm feeling great! This is the attitude everyone should have when they come back from vacation.

Dark Knight Rises

I saw Dark Knight Rises that opening weekend but it's amazing to me how many of my friends continue to ask me if I want to go see Dark Knight Rises. Literally, I get invitations to go see it every week since it opened and by friends who've already seen it!

Why do people want to see it again? Could it be that Dark Knight Rises is the best movie in the Batman trilogy? Because I thought the Dark Knight was better. DK had a popular villian in the Joker and better actor in Heath Ledger. Come on everyone remembers the "Y so serious?" line and that Halloween every other dude was the Joker. So why the mass appeal of Dark Knight Rises?

Could it be that people who wanted to see Dark Knight Rises but were scared off by the Aurora massacre are now wanting to come out to theaters again? We'll never really know for sure. Meanwhile, Dark Knight Rises continues to be #1 at the Box Office.

Yale University Campus Visit

I just came back from a wonderful trip to New Haven, CT where I visited Yale University on my 31st birthday. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing and one thing led to another and I ended up there.

It was a short trip, but the memories will last a lifetime. The trip inspired me to become more than what I'm doing now. It got me thinking of graduate school and higher education. Being on the Yale University campus and surrounded by all the rich history of cultural, social, and economic achievements of human beings just gave me chills. I am now more conscious of the higher level of thinking that human beings are capable of achieving. How inspirational is that!

I am so thankful I got the opportunity to have visited Yale University! The students and employees were so nice and I'm happy to have met and related with them. They were humble and not stuck up as I had thought. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip more than I expected and it just goes to show you how travel is good for you.

As useless as my Political Science degree is, and I know I sound bitter, it has been a blessing in disguise because it has forced me to work harder to achieve not only what's possible but what in my mind thought was improbable. Had I not struggled in my career early on, I would not have pushed myself to become the person that I am today.

My first full time job was in a call center and 7+ years later I still work at a call center. It's not the easiest job in the world especially when one has to deal with difficult customers and a demanding boss. My position offers decent pay and benefits (hey who doesn't like free cable!) but it's not something I see myself doing 3 to 5 years from now. I realize this at the wise old age of 31. I have to reach for something greater.

There are three things I am focusing on daily in terms of my job.

First, is add value to the customer and company. Adding value is something I've picked up from being around friends who are successful. Th…

I turn 31 years old today. It's hard imagine that I'm closer to forty than to twenty, but that's the truth and the saying goes the truth will set you free. In my 31 years of life I have been blessed and I consider myself a lucky person. Now that's not to say that I wouldn't have done things differently. In fact, most definitely I would have studied harder and majored in something other than Political Science, but do I have any regrets, nope! I am the person that I am because of the way I've lived my life. I thank God for each day that I get to spend with my friends and family and that's all I can really ask for.
